Teeth Whitening Kits
Teeth whitening kits offer a faster solution to over the counter products and are a safe product to use at home. There are several different types of teeth whitening kits that can be bought. There are gel strips, teeth whitening trays that include whitening gel, activated charcoal powder, teeth whitening kits with LED lights to “speed” up the process. Depending on the teeth stains that you have intrinsic or extrinsic, depends on the type of product that will work best for your teeth.
Many at home teeth whitening kits include hydrogen peroxide and carbamide peroxide. The lower the percentage of peroxide the least likely the teeth whitening kit is going to cause pain and sensitivity. In office whitening and bleaching agents have a higher percentage of peroxide that can go deep into the tooth and remove intrinsic stains. Anything more than 35% of peroxide in a whitening agent will almost always cause tooth pain and discomfort.

Teeth Whitening Kits: Ingredients
Generally, teeth whitening kits only contain a small percentage of peroxide that is safe to use at home. Never use the product longer than recommended or more product than what is needed, or the teeth whitening product will cause pain and discomfort and possible long-term effects.
With teeth whitening strips you have to be careful not to let them rest on your gums or your gums will become irritated. It may be useful to apply a small amount of Vaseline on the gums to keep the strips from causing any harm. Another type of teeth whitening kit is teeth trays with teeth whitening gel. With teeth trays, the whitening gel is applied in the teeth tray and then set in the mouth for a certain amount of time to remove intrinsic or extrinsic stains (depending on the product). There are also activated charcoal powders that contain charcoal powder, bentonite, and orange seed oil that can help remove extrinsic stains. Charcoal powders only require a tooth brush and can take a few weeks to see results. There are several teeth whitening kits that also include an LED light in order to speed up results. Although, this seems like it would work there are actually no proven studies that have shown to make a difference with LED lights. Teeth whitening kits can take a few weeks to a month or two to see results, depending on the product.
Pros and Cons of Teeth Whitening Kits Containing Peroxide
The pro to using peroxide-based teeth whiteners is the time it takes for your teeth to become visibly whiter. Because peroxide is a strong chemical that breaks down stains in the enamel it can be a quick process to get rid of stains, but teeth whitening can often include side effects. Some people experience short term side effects like gum irritation, pain, discomfort, and tooth sensitivity. The chemicals contained in teeth whitening products can be harmful to your teeth if they are left on for too long, especially if they contain a higher percentage of peroxide.
The two types of peroxide that teeth whitening kits usually contain are carbamide peroxide and hydrogen peroxide. Carbamide peroxide breaks down with water and releases hydrogen peroxide, so there is usually a higher percentage of carbamide peroxide in whitening agents. For example, a whitening kit with 10% carbamide peroxide can yield 3.5% hydrogen peroxide. Just for reference the brown bottles that contain 3% hydrogen peroxide and there is around 10% of hydrogen peroxide in whitening products. People with sensitive teeth should try to stay away from peroxide because it can cause pain and discomfort for several days.
It is possible for the enamel to break down if one is not careful with the teeth whitening kits and uses more product or leaves the product on longer than recommended. Excessive teeth whitening can cause the enamel to break down leaving permanent damage. Tooth erosion, pulpal damage and tooth mineral degradation could be possible effects from overdoing it on the teeth whitening. It is important to talk to your dentist about any product that you are considering (containing bleaching agents or peroxide) that could possibly damage your teeth.
Words To Know
- Extrinsic Stains: Extrinsic stains are stains on the surface of the teeth also known as the enamel. These stains are generally made by regularly consuming foods and drinks such as coffee, wine, black tea, soda, acidic drinks or food, poor oral hygiene, chewing tobacco and smoking.
- Intrinsic Stains: Intrinsic tooth stains occur when there is a stain on the dentin which is the layer before the enamel.
My boyfriend actually noticed!
On the advice of my dentist I was told to stay away from teeth whiteners that were peroxide based. When I found Instadazzle and read the ingredients I realized it was safe for my teeth so I figured it was worth a try. I’m SO glad I found this!! They said it would take up to 4 weeks but I saw a difference in the first couple days. My boyfriend, who never notices ANYTHING, even asked if I was using some sort of new toothpaste. Thanks Instadazzle!

WOW, It really works!
Thank you guys at InstaDazzle. I have been using this for only a few days and already I am getting compliments. This is so much better than the toxic stuff I have used in the past, which hurt my gums and made my teeth feel like they were on fire everytime I drank a glass of cold water. Plus I don’t have to use those stupid tray and gel systems anymore… do those lights even work? Again, thanks a bunch, love it.
